LP PU WAEN SUJINNO

Rian Dhutanga (Ascetic Practice) BE252X Consecrated By: Luang Pu Waen, Wat Doi Mae Pang, Chiangmai

Luang Pu Waen Sujinno was born on the 16th February, 1883 (BE 2426) in Tambon Na Pong, Muang District of Loei Province to a blacksmith's family. He was named Yarn and had one elder sister. He ordained as a novice monk in 1892 at Wat Bodhi Chai in Na Pong at the age of 9 to fulfill the wish of his mother, when she suddenly died, while LP Waen was 5 years old. He studied with a number of teachers and later ordained as a monk at a temple in Hua Tapam district of Ubon Ratchathani at the age of 21.

Amongst the teachers he studied with, one of them was Ajarn Mun Bhuridatta Thera in Udon Thani who taught him the virtues of the pursuance of a secluded life and the practice of meditation and Dhamma in the jungles. Subsequently, Luang Pu traveled widely in the Northeast of Thailand in search of isolated places where he could meditate. His travels took him to Bangkok where he metChao Khun Phra Upali Gunupamacariya of Wat Bovoranives in 1921 with whom Luang Pu Waen spent several years studying and practising the Dhamma. Later, Chao Khun Phra Upali took him to Wat Chedi Luang in Chiangmai where Luang Pu Waen decided to make a switch from the Maha Nikaya sect of the Theravada Buddhism to the stricter Dhammayutika Nikaya sect.

Luang Pu Waen travelled extensively by foot through thick jungles and remote mountains and even ventured into Myanmar and India where he paid homage at several historic sacred Buddhist sites. In the year of 1995, news of a foot injury sustained during his stay in the seclusion at Wat Paa Ban Pong in Mae Taeng District, Chiangmai, reached Ajarn Noo Suchito of Wat Doi Mae Pang, who later arranged for Luang Poo Waen to stay in Wat Doi Mae Pang permanently. Wat Doi Mae Pang then became the residence of Luang Pu Waen until his passing away in 1985 (BE 2528). Even then Luang Pu did not reside in the monastery itself, but in a secluded hut a short distance away from the actual monastery.

Luang Pu Waen began consecrating amulets and sacred images after settling down in Wat Doi Mae Pang. Luang Pu's amulets and sacred images were all consecrated for meritorious purposes like raising funds for charitable organisations and hospitals. Many of his pendants were also specially created and distributed to armed forces personnel for their protection. Many devotees also started having miraculous experiences with him and his amulets then, the most famous one, which was mentioned in the Asia Magazine, being the incident of him being spotted floating in the sky by an air force pilot. Luang Pu Waen Sujinno was widely rumoured to possess the mystical power to float in the air, to cure illness and to energize amulets that protected the wearer from bullets and knives. General Kriangsak Chamanand, supreme commander of the armed forces in 1979 gave Thai soldiers amulets of Luang Pu Waen to protect them against what he described as Thailand's greatest enemy at that time, the Communist Party. The King in 1978 sponsored a medallion with the images of Luang Pu Waen Sujinno and the royal crown which was sold to pay for the construction of several hospitals. The popular amulets were distributed through banks and businesses and raised billions of baht.

Luang Phor Waen became popular when a pilot of the Royal Thai Air Force was flying a plane - well I don't know how high but in the clouds anyway. And he suddenly noticed a monk sitting meditating outside his cabin. Yet he thought that was strange and he told people about it when he got back but no one knew who it could have been.

He was interested, then he got his maps out, looked at where he had been flying and calculated that he had been flying over Doi Mae Pang when it happened. So he went back and talked to the villagers. They told him that Luang Pu Waen was the monk they most respected and he decided it must be him. Besdies, Luamg Pu Waen meditates regularly and that makes him "extraordinary". Since after that incident, he has been famous all over Thailand.

"Do You Think I'm a bird?"
This Article in the newspaper featured the "Flying" Incident.

On 15th April, 1985, Luang Pu Waen was found to be unable to eat or move and was admitted into the Maharaj Hospital. He was operated on 4th June, 1985 in order to insert a tube into his stomach through which he would be fed. However, various complications developed and Phra Ajarn Noo, then the abbot of Wat Doi Mae Pang requested doctors not to perform any more operations as he wanted Luang Pu to rest peacefully. His request was granted by doctors and the Governor of Chiangmai, Mr. Chaiya Punsiriwong.

On 2ndJuly, 1985 (BE2528) at 9.54 pm, Luang Pu finally passed away after having been in the monkhood for almost 90 years. He was given a royally-sponsored bathing ceremony at Sala Ang Klaew in Chiangmai University which was attended by the King and Queen of Thailand as well as the general public. The staff of the Maharaj Hospital in Chiangmai observed 3 minutes of silence as a mark of respect for Luang Pu in memorial service. Plenty of pictures were taken by reporters for news reports. Many people were amazed when the pictures developed as what seems like images of Luang Pu had appeared miraculously on many of the pictures taken on that day.

Luang Pu's sacred remains  were kept at Wat Doi Mae Pang for almost a year for devotees to pay their respects. The remains were cremated at the Royal Funeral on 16th January, 1986. The cremation was attneded by the King and Queen of Thailand, the Prime Minister and half a million devotees. Just as the sacred fire was consuming the remains of Luang Pu amidst the chanting of monks and devotees, the image of Luang Pu Warn miraculously manifested within the flames of the funeral pyre. This incident was witnessed by many devotees and was well documented in many magazines and books about Luang Pu.

Subsequently, the remains of Luang Pu transformed into smooth grains like crystals, precious stones and class shortly after the cremation, leading many people to strongly believe that Luang Pu had attained the state of an Arahant. However, despite much attention given to the miracles related to Luang Pu, there is no doubt that what Luang Pu would have wanted us to remember about him would be his legacy of pure Dhamma practice.

"What is Sacred? Everyone  has something sacred within themselves. To have been born as a complete human being is already sacred. One can be sacred only from within Oneself, and not by any amulets or other sacred objects.Dhamma is sacred and to have this sacredness, one must have Dhamma within Oneself"

As a very popular monk, Luang Waen Sujinno was often believed to have "Sacred Amulets", something which Thais from all walks of life like to receive from respectable monks, for their protective value. People from all over Thailand would often travel to Wat Doi Mae Pang to seek these amulets or sacred objects from him and he would always give the same answer as the one quoted above.

LUANG PHOR DUNE ATULO, WAT BURAPHARAM, SURIN

LUANG PHOR DUNE ATULO, WAT BURAPHARAM

Luang Phor Dune (Phra Rajavudhacariya Atulo) was born in the village of Prasat in Surin Province, Thailand on 4th October, 1888. He was the oldest in a family of 5 children and so took on much of the family responsibilities. In the mid-teens he became a lead actor in the provincial theatre. At the age of 22, he ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Jumapolsuddhavasa in Surin. After his ordination, he resided at Wat Kauko just outside the city of Surin where he practiced meditation under the guidance of Ajarn Luang Phor Aak. With the monks discipline not very strictly observed and with his crude duties of caring for cattle and building ox carts, he became disillusioned after 6 years and decided to look into the scholastic side of monasticism. He therefore went to a temple to study in the city of Ubon Ratchathani.

After studying for several years, he came to the conclusion that studies only offered memory and knowledge and not the real experience of practice. About this time, Thailand's most honored and reknown forest monk (Arjan Mun Bhuridatta) came to stay for the rainy retreats (vassas) near to the city. and later moved to another forest temple called Wat Rongong Samet. He remained there during the rainy retreats but continued to go wandering outside that time especially the deep virgin forests of Cambodia.

For the last 50 years of his life, he resided at Wat Burapharam in Surin. He entered Parinibbana om30th October, 1983 at the age of 96 years old.

PHRA AJAHN MUN BHURIDATTA

AJARN MUN BHURIDATTA

Phra Ajahn Mun Bhuridatta 1970-1949 was a Thai Bhikkhu of Lao descent who is credited along with his mentor, Ajarn Sao Kantasilo with establishing the Thai Forest Tradition or "Kammatthana Tradition" that subsequently spread through out Thailand and to several countries abroad.

Phra Ajahn Mun was born in Ban Kham Bong a farming village in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Isan. Oradained as a monk in 1893, he spent the remainder of his life wandering through Thailand, Burma and Laso dwelling for the most part in the forest, engaged in the practice of meditation. He attracted an enormous following of students and together with his teacher,Phra  Ajahn Sao Kantasilo (1961-1941) established the Thai Forest Tradition (the Kammatthana Tradition) that subsequently spread throughout Thailand and to several conuntries abroad. He died at Wat Suddhavasa, Sakorn Nakhon Province.

Phra Ajahn Mun's mode of practice was solitary and strict. He followed the Vinaya (Monastic Discipline) faithfully, and also observed many of what are known as the 13 classic dhutanga (ascetic) practices, such as living off alms food, wearing robes made of cast-off rags, dwelling in the forest and eating only one meal a day. Monks following this tradition are known as "tudong", the Thai pronunciation of this Pali word.

Searching out secluded places in the wilds of Thailand and Laos, he avoided the responsibilities of settled monastic life and spent long hours of the day and night in meditation. In spite of his reclusive nature, he attracted a large following of students willing to put up with the hardships of forest life in order to study with him.
